Where to Find WordPress Themes
When it comes to WordPress themes, you can find free and paid themes. Although there is not an official repository of free WordPress templates, there are several websites like Theme Forest that offer free WordPress templates. It’s worth mentioning that finding the right topic could be a bit tricky considering there are no extensive filtering options.
You can filter and view themes based on category so you can easily see nothing but themes for sites or choose to focus on magazine, e-commerce, portfolio or a different industry. Or browse through 1000s of templates using our theme template searcher.

In this half of the page, I am going to explain step by step how to install a WordPress theme and how to test until you choose the one that suits you best. In addition, I will also talk to you about what is important to take into account when making a choice.
Once you have installed and configured your new WordPress blog, it’s time to change its look. And that’s what the themes take care of.
A WordPress theme (also known as themes or templates) is a file that is installed on your blog and that is used to change its design, both in structure and colours.
Come on, what would be the aesthetic part of the blog.
In this post, I am going to teach you how to install WordPress themes so you can start testing them. But before I would like to tell you a little more about how they affect your blog, since it is not only about purely aesthetic topics, but they will also affect its operation and user experience.
When choosing a topic for your blog, the “technical” part should weigh the same as the more visual part when making the decision. So if you like a template very much in the design, but its performance is lousy, you should discard it.
We are talking about the topic you choose is going to affect security, loading speed and SEO.
Security
WordPress is already very safe in itself with regard to viruses or when it comes to preventing someone from improperly accessing your blog. But templates and plugins could also be a source of gateways to such problems.
The best thing is that when installing a template you should look at the documentation provided by the developer, or the features it offers, to see if it makes any mention of security.
Normally, professional (paid) templates usually indicate that they have taken great care of this aspect, but there are also free templates that should not give you any problem in this regard.
But above all, and very importantly, don’t install templates downloaded from untrusted sites. Always use templates that you have downloaded from the WordPress repertoire itself or from the developer’s own website.
And yes, I am referring above all to the topic of pirated templates. Who tells you that the one who gives it to you has not injected some type of malicious code that could cause problems on your blog?
Seriously listen to me in this part
Loading speed
This is another fundamental aspect that you should take into account.
A well-designed and well-optimized template should have little impact on the loading times of your blog.
Keep in mind that when loading a page on the Internet everything counts: the more ornaments or more elements a template has, the longer it will take.
Mind you, that doesn’t mean you have to choose a super spartan insole if you don’t like it. Of course, you can choose one that has more embellishments, just make sure it is well optimized and works well.
The developers usually indicate that, but if you don’t trust it, the best thing is that you look to see if it offers to try a demo (sometimes you can download it to test it on your own blog and sometimes you can test it in a simulator from its own website ). This will give you an idea of how fast the blog loads with that template.
Today there are templates that are amazing how well they work. For example, the Genesis ones do not affect almost anything to the loading times and they have a great performance.
SEO
This section is closely linked to the previous one since Google tends to better position blogs that load fast. It is also a very important factor that the template is responsive (that adapts to the small screens of mobile devices) since Google also values it a lot.
Besides, developers also often indicate if their template is “SEO friendly”. That means that it is already prepared with all the code that Google needs to be able to correctly read the information on your blog.
You already know that the more you take care of SEO the better Google will position you in the results of its searches, so it all adds up
Until now we have been talking about the operation, but the design is also a very important part when making the choice. And in fact, when deciding, it usually has a fundamental weight.
These are the elements that you should look at when choosing the template design since it will also affect important things such as the structure of the blog.
In this case, it is not necessary that the template you choose meets all that we are going to see since here the important thing is that it adapts to what you are looking for. But this list is interesting to see everything a template can offer you.
In addition, many of the things that we will see later cannot be changed unless you change the template again.
Structure and versatility
This is the most important part since it is what most affects the design.
Take a good look at the arrangement of the different elements: header, logo, menu, sidebar, etc., and check that it adapts to what you need.
There are templates that are very versatile, and that allows you to choose a lot of different layouts or designs within them. Or they also include quite a few places where you can add widgets.
These things depend directly on the design of the template and then it will be very difficult for you to make modifications that go beyond what the theme itself offers you.
That is also a point in their favour since many times you have an idea in your head when setting up the blog and within a few months, you change it because your needs have changed.
Anyway, it is also normal to test a few templates before finding the definitive one, so don’t worry, that has happened to all of us. And it is also normal that on many occasions you have to adapt a little to what the template offers if you do not find the “perfect” template.
Design
The design refers to the structure, but also to the colours and typeface that the blog uses.
Make sure the colours suit what you are looking for. In fact, there are templates that include different colour ranges for you to choose the one you like the most.
And another important thing that you should look at is the typography, since then that is something difficult to change.
The most professional templates let you choose the font and size (or include a plugin that does), but the truth is that it is not very common to find that option. So you have to see that the typography that comes standard with the theme adapts to what you need (later, if you need it, it could be changed with a plugin, but the fewer plugins you use the better).
Headboard
How is the header? Big, small, colours, etc. Can you put a logo? How big will it be?
These are the things you should be looking at, as it is going to be the first thing your readers see and it should be total to your liking.
There are templates that allow you to make any modifications to the header, but the normal thing is that they are somewhat more limited, so it is best if you choose one that already has a header as you like or that you know can be modified.
Menus
How much do you have? Where can they be placed?
The lack of menus is something that can be easily solved with a plugin, but hey, if the template already includes all those options better.
You already know that the fewer plugins you install, the better your WordPress blog will work, and there are many templates that already include options that will allow you to save that extra plugin
Sidebar
In English, it is known as a “sidebar”, and it is that side column that is usually on the right in most blogs.
Now it is tending to be removed to simplify the design and give more prominence to the texts, but well, the truth is that it is still something that is seen a lot.
If you want to use it, check that your template includes one. What’s more, there are templates that allow you to even choose which side you want to put it on or even if you want to use two at the same time, one on each side.
There are also plugins that allow you to add this sidebar, but I refer to the previous one.
Footer
The footer is the area that appears below the blog.
There are those who use it and those who do not. For example, on my blog, I don’t use it. But hey, it is a very good place to add menus or options that you have not put in the main menus because otherwise, it would have been too ornate.
It is also a good area to add widgets, such as a subscription form or links to your social networks.
Blog page design
How the posts page looks are something that depends 100% on the topic you choose. There are themes that only show an extract of the text of each entry, others only a photo, others a text and a photo, etc. There are dozens of combinations here, and the vast majority of templates let you choose the one you want.
A good design of this section will make it easier to search for content within your blog.
In addition, as a tip, that there are images always helps to make you want to read a post more.
Responsive
That a template is responsive means that it adapts its design to the small screens of mobile devices, and this is very important.
Mobile traffic is increasingly important, and you have to assume that a large number of visits to your blog will be made from a mobile phone or tablet. That is why it is necessary that you make it easy for your visitor and that you offer a website that adapts perfectly to that smaller screen.
It is important because Google highly appreciates that a blog is responsive when it comes to positioning it in its searches, but it is also very important because for the reader it will be much easier to navigate your blog since everything will be much better adapted.
Updates and documentation
Another important aspect is that the developer updates the templates.
A theme that takes a long time without updating could be synonymous with being somewhat abandoned by its creator.
And if it includes documentation with instructions on how the theme works and how things are configured, well, better than better!
Now that you have a clearer idea of how to choose a template for your blog, it’s time to see how they are installed so you can start testing until you find the one that best suits your needs.
There are two ways to install a WordPress theme: one is by taking one directly from its repertoire, and the other is by uploading it from your computer.
Go for it.
How to install a WordPress theme from your own repertoire
In the side menu of the WordPress desktop, you have to go to where it says “Appearance” -> “Themes” [1]
There you will get the (so to speak) control centre for your blog topics. From there we will install and uninstall everything.
The boxes you see there [2] are themes that are already installed, and to install a new one you will have to go to the button where it says “Add new” [3].
From the new screen that will appear you can search and install the themes that are included in the repertoire of WordPress itself. Those themes are all free: some are 100% free, and others are a minor and free version of a premium paid theme, for you to try, but without all the features.
From the top bar [4] you can filter topics by highlights, recent, popular and even by features, and you also have a space on the right where you can write the name of the topic you are looking for in case you already know which one you want.
To install a theme from there, hover over the one that interests you and you will get new options [5] (you can also click on the theme to see a description of it before installing it).
If you click on the blue button where it says “Install” directly it will be installed on your blog. In order for a new theme to be visible on your blog, in addition to installing it, it must also be activated, so do not worry about installing themes that will not change the design of your blog automatically.
You can also click the “Preview” button to see a demo of what the theme looks like without installing it.
If you look at the image, on the left comes a slightly broader description with the characteristics of the theme and on the right how the theme looks.
If you like what you see, click on the “Install” button that appears at the top left [6] or, if you don’t like it and want to leave that view, click on the X [7] to close and return to where you were
The case is that when you click to install a theme you will get an image like the following:
Now that the theme is installed, as I mentioned before, it needs to be activated so that the new design becomes visible on your blog. To do this, click on the button that says “Activate” [8]. Once that is done, the design of your blog will have changed to that of the new theme and you will be able to see how it looks with your own content.
Keep in mind that many times from what you see in the demo to what you see in your blog it seems rather little. You may have to reconfigure a menu or widget to make it look like you want.
However, if once installed you don’t want to activate it and you just want to leave it there, click where it says “Return to the topic page”.
How to install a WordPress theme from your computer
Now that we have seen how to install a theme from the WordPress repertoire, let’s see how to install a theme that you have downloaded to your computer from the developer’s website.
To do this, you have to return to the view of the themes that you can install from WordPress, and if you look at the top left a button will appear that says “Upload theme” [9].
Click the “select file” button and choose the topic you want to upload.
Here it is very important that you keep in mind that the themes are uploaded in a compressed zip file. This is how you have downloaded it directly from the developer’s website, and this is how you have to upload it, without decompressing it at any time, since WordPress takes care of everything.
Once you have the chosen file you will see the name appear and you can now click on the “Install now” button [11] to install it.
Once installed you will get a screen very similar to the one we have seen before, from which you can activate the new theme to change the design of the blog, or from which you can go back without activating the theme and continue to maintain the visual aspect of the blog.
I already tell you that if you do not activate a theme after installing it, the look of your blog will not change.
How to change themes and how to uninstall the ones you don’t want to use.
Now that you know how WordPress themes are installed, it’s time to test them to see which one is the most and uninstall the ones you won’t use.
It is very easy, you will see
Go back to the beginning of everything, to appearance -> themes to see all the themes that are installed on your blog (we have been there before, do you remember?).
The one that comes out first is the theme that is installed and active on your blog [12] . That is, the one you are using. The rest of the themes that appear are installed but not active
To activate one of these themes you can hover over it and you will see an “activate” button appear [13] .
You can also click on them and you will get a description of the topic and more options besides the one to activate, such as the preview [14] .
If you click on “Preview” you will see how the theme looks on your blog (with your content and images, not with demo content and images) but without activating it, that is, without visitors seeing the change.
And if you click on activate you will change the look of your blog to the new theme.
Once you have a winning theme to stay on your blog, you can delete the rest that you are not going to use (in fact, it is advisable to do so).
To do this, in this same window in which we are with the details of the theme that you have installed, at the bottom right you will see that it says “Delete” [15]. Click here and you will get a warning message, click accept and voila, you have already deleted the topic.
You already know everything you need to choose a good topic for your blog and do tests with it. Now it’s up to you to start looking for a theme that looks great.
Jump into the pool and let yourself be a little intuitive, but don’t forget everything we talked about at the beginning.
And keep in mind that when you install a template for the first time on your blog, it will not look exactly the same as in the demo. It is very possible that you have to touch up something or add new images so that everything is seen perfectly.
If the theme is free you will not lose anything to try, and if it is paid you just have to get a little more information before buying it.
The best thing is that if you see a blog that has a topic that you like, you should contact the owner to ask him, to see if you want to tell him. You can also use these tools to see what themes a WordPress blog uses.
And regarding free or paid themes, if you are serious about your blog, it is worth buying a premium paid theme. The vast majority perfectly meets all the requirements that we have seen at the beginning and the quality of the note.
Would you really build a business with free materials? Well if you are serious with your blog you should ask yourself the same question. A Premium theme is one of the best investments you can make on a blog.
And so far the tutorial on how to install a WordPress theme. What has been easy?
